A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Friday on the site of a new substation soon to be built in Cape Girardeau.

The addition is part of a series of infrastructure upgrades planned by Ameren Missouri to improve reliability and meet growing demand for electricity in the region. The program is called the Cape Girardeau Electric Reliability Program.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Ameren-owned land that soon will be home to the Hitt Substation, 6105 State Highway K, Cape Girardeau. A second substation, Heritage, will be built nearby. Construction is expected to begin soon -- by early 2015 -- and wrap up in May 2016.

Guest speakers at Friday's groundbreaking include Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger, state Sen. Wayne Wallingford, Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce president and CEO John Mehner and Bob Dixon, Ameren Missouri's director of the Southeast Missouri Division.
