CHAFFEE - The new North Scott County Ambulance District building will undergo remodeling over the next few months, with district representatives hoping to hold an open house by early spring.

The district reported its remodeling plans include construction of a training room, manager's office, garage, and living quarters for emergency personnel. Emergency Medical Technician Carla Glueck said the district moved into the new building, a two-bedroom brick house south of Chaffee on Highway 77, on Oct. 16.

Glueck said the district expects the remodeling to be done through the winter, with the district's goal being the open house in early spring. Along with the remodeling, she said, a two-vehicle ambulance bay is under construction.

An office now exists for district customers' needs, the district said. The ambulance office can be reached at 887-6311.

The district currently has only one ambulance at the location. One of two ambulances now at Scott City will be moved to the location after the bay is completed, said Glueck.

The district ultimately moved to the location because of the November 1990 fire in the former ambulance garage at Chaffee City Hall. Since the fire the district had operated out of two separate locations in Chaffee, said Glueck.

The district bought the real estate for $45,000. At the time, district Board of Directors member Ervin Arnzen said an ambulance garage would be built on the house for a total anticipated cost of $75,000 to $80,000.

Glueck said some district employees are volunteering labor toward the remodeling to cut back on costs.
