COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- A paramedic treating a patient in the back of an ambulance is injured after the driver could not avoid hitting several deer on U.S. 63 in Boone County.

The Highway Patrol says the deer were in the middle of the highway when the northbound ambulance struck them at around 1 a.m. Monday.

Troopers say 31-year-old paramedic Matthew Parvin suffered moderate injuries and was taken to University Hospital in Columbia. The driver and the unidentified patient were not injured in the accident.

The patrol says the ambulance was traveling at normal highway speed at the time of the mishap.
