The meeting was called to order by Commander Bill Sullivan; 30 members were present.
The color guard advanced the colors, Chaplain Boyd Summers gave the invocation, members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and Preamble of the American Legion Constitution in unison.
Charles Hutson introduced Katie Townsend, a student at Jackson High School, who is participating in the oratorical contest. Katie's topic was "Knowledge is Preservation." She stated we, in America have a rather limited knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, and we should strive to get better acquainted with the real meaning of the Constitution.
Shane Anderson was introduced, and requested use of the Legion Hall for the senior citizens. Shane is director Jackson City Parks. He was granted permission.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed.
Mike Proctor gave the financial report, which was accepted.
Carlton Meyer reported 480 paid members for year 2001.
Mike Hyson and Dale Smith are in the hospital, and Vince Schwartz has been released from a recent stay in the hospital.
Bill Poe mentioned the hospital equipment is being used, and will present a club room report next month.
A second vote was taken on the Post 158 being a corporate sponsor for the Veteran's Golf tournament. Motion carried. Charles reported plans are being made for Jackson High School to present a Veteran's Day program for year 2001.
Post 158 Honor Guard participated in the Christmas parade the first Saturday in December.
A Christmas tree has been donated and decorated and is on display in the Legion Hall in memory of Paul Myer.
Leon Laurentius gave the House Report.
The sum of $40 had been collected in the Club Room in honor of Clarence Biri, and donated to the American Legion Baseball program.
Leonard Adams gave the Bingo report still profitable.
Don Darnell made a motion for Post 158 to donate $100 to
the New McKendree United Methodist Church for use of Cox Hall for the Veterans' Day program. Motion carried.
Some of the colors on the memorial in the parking area have faded. This matter has been referred to the trustees,
Anyone wanting to purchase a baseball-type cap with the Legion emblem, cost is $15, and are for sale.
Harold Landgraf and Betty presented money to the scholarship fund in memory of Betty Johnson.
Letters of appreciation were read, including one from the National Commander.
The name of Russell Welker was drawn for the attendance prize, he was not present. The names of Terry Reed, Edward Fuller, Ken Ruff and Raymond Davis were drawn for Half of the money, no one present.
Chaplain Summers gave the memorial, closing remarks were made by the Commander, the colors were retired, and meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
Leonard Adams had provided for cold cuts to be served in the dining room, which was enjoyed by all. Thanks Leonard.
