* Minutes of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 meeting for Jan. 9, 2001.
The meeting was called to order by Commander Bill Sullivan.
The color guard advanced the colors, Chaplain Boyd Summers gave the invocation, members recited the pledge of allegiance to the flag and Preamble of the American Legion Constitution in unison. Forty-four members were present.
Summers gave the program, which was a memorial in honor of Post 158 comrades who died last year. It was a time of reverence, to reflect back on our comrades who have fought and finished the good fight. They are as follows: Troy Proffer, Ernst Hoffmann, Leo Sticht, Glen K. Thompson, Johnny L. Byrd, Sherman Cracraft Jr., Martin Piepenbrook, Fred Clippard Sr., Joseph H. Knowlton, Robert Rosenquist, Clinton Wendell, Arthur Crandal, William A. Tesson, Leonard J. Conrad, Al Zahner, Paul R. Myer, Richard K. Spalding, George S. Miller, Pertle E. Probst, Alvin A. Rhodes, Kenneth Lennington, Joe Dauphine, Thurman G. Statler, Albert Bertling and Clarence Biri.
The minutes of the previous meeting was approved.
Mike Proctor g gave the financial report, which was accepted. Lloyd Law, vice commander, reported 550 paid members. Harlan Siebert, trustee, reported work is continuing on the sign. Bill Poe gave the club room report, and stated Kenneth Koehler gave a shower chair to the post for someone who may need it in the future, and that 50 glasses were purchased from the club room by Cathy James.
Carlton Meyer reported a flag was given away. Jim Nelson informed us a gift of $200 from bingo to the scholarship fund, in memory of deceased comrades.
Charles Hutson, Americanism chairman, announced a meeting for past commanders was to be held Jan. 17. Also, oratorical contestant, Katie Townsend will represent Jackson at Festus on the next level in the state oratorical contest.
Leon Laurentius gave the house report for December and the year of 2000. Leonard Adams reported there was no bingo during December because of inclement weather.
Jim Nelson announced contributions to the legion memorial scholarship fund from Gerald and Darlene Price, in memory of Paul Myer; Harold and Betty Landgraf, in memory of Betty Johnson; and Bill Poe, in memory of Bill Thompson.
Sullivan reported subscriptions of the Stars and Stripes were available at $19 a year, and that the post will receive $3 a subscription.
The name of Kenneth Parrett was drawn for the attendance prize of $65.50, not present. The names of Donald W. Brown, M.C. Burford, Nelson Farrow, and Michael Conley were drawn for half; none was present.
Summers gave the memorial service, and Sullivan made closing remarks before the colors were retired, and meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m. Members proceeded to the dining hall where Vince Schwartz had prepared chili. Very good, Vince.
