Alma Schrader Elementary School will participate in Walk to School Day at 7:30 a.m. today beginning at Dennis Scivally Park on Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau.
Students, teachers, parents, grandparents and others are being encouraged to walk to school. Walkers are asked to gather at the park shelter by 7:30 a.m. All walkers will leave the park at 7:45 a.m. and walk to Alma Schrader School on the sidewalks along Masters Drive and Randol Avenue, and arrive at the school before 8 a.m. A police officer will assist in traffic control. The walk is sponsored by Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation and the Parent-Teacher Association of Alma Schrader Elementary School.
"This event is a great way to emphasize the healthy aspects of walking to school and highlight ways to help make walking more attractive as a way to get to school," said Mark Langenfeld, a professor at Southeast.
For more information, contact Langenfeld at 651-2461 or 573-450-8348 or Alma Schrader School principal Ruth Ann Orr at 335-5310.
