Alma Schrader Elementary will participate Wednesday in Walk to School Day, a nationwide event that promotes health through physical activity, safety and concern for the environment.

According to a news release from Southeast Missouri State University, university faculty and students from the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation will be at Dennis Scivally Park and join the walk to promote healthful walking for students and their families.

Walkers will gather at 7:30 a.m. in the park. School staff, PTA members and others will be present, as will a police officer to assist in traffic control as parents drop their children off at the park. Walkers will leave the park at 7:45 a.m. and walk to the school on the sidewalks along Masters Drive and Randol Avenue. The group will arrive at the school shortly before 8 a.m.

In 2005, the first Alma Schrader Elementary participation year brought attention to the lack of sidewalks near the school. Sidewalks have since been installed along the school's property.
