With all returns in for Southern Illinois, some primary election races that were too close to call late Tuesday have been decided. With all returns in for Southern Illinois, some primary election races that were too close to call late Tuesday have been decided.

With only half of the precincts counted in Alexander County, two close races were in doubt. Supervisor of Assessments Dorothy Mayberry had led challenger Debbie M. Henderson by only 11 votes with six of 11 precincts reporting. Mayberry emerged the winner by a vote of 1,463 to 1,371.

Mayberry will be unopposed in the November general election.

In another race that was close, Democratic Treasurer Frances Lee emerged the winner. Lee got 1,505 votes to Nancy Willis Kline's 1,106. Lee has no opponent in November.

In other Alexander County races, Louis W. Maze emerged a winner from a four-person Democratic field for county clerk. Maze, with 1,068 votes, will face Republican Gery P. Clark in November.

John "Andy" Clark emerged a winner in a three-persons Democratic race for county commissioner and will face Michael D. Caldwell in the general election. Caldwell defeated David D. McNeely in the Republican commissioner's race.

Glenn Poshard, who won the Democratic primary for Illinois governor, collected more than 7,000 votes in Union Pulaski and Alexander counties. His three opponents received 1,346 votes collectively in those three counties. Poshard had 4,117 votes in Union County, 2,114 in Alexander, and 772 in Pulaski.

County clerk

Democrat -- Tanna Goins, Grand Chain, 782 votes.

Republican -- Rita K. Flummer, Mounds, 928 votes.

Treasurer

Democrat -- Venita Kerr Hancock, Villa Ridge, 706 votes.

Republican -- Incumbent Robert "Robbie" Moore, Mounds, 1,070 votes.

Sheriff

Democrats -- Randy Kern, America, 274 votes; John Price, Mounds, 197 votes; Jeff Caudle, Karnak, 496 votes.

Republican -- Russell "Rusty" Dakin, Mounds, 1,007 votes; Elmer Rose, Olmsted, 255 votes.

County commissioner

Democrat -- Bob Gilley, Mounds, 643 votes.

Republican -- Incumbent Travis Rose Jr., Olmsted, 395 votes; Bill Atherton, Ullin, 883 votes.

Republicans -- Relis J. Oliver, Cobden, 577 votes; Incumbent Larry A. Wheaton, Jonesboro, 514 votes; Kerry Glasco, Jonesboro, 275.

SPECIAL PROPOSITION

Proposition to issue $1.5 million in school building bonds for Cobden Community Unit School District 17. Referendum passed, 298 to 92.
