JACKSON - All Cape Girardeau County tax bills - over 53,000 of them - are now in the mail.
Anyone not receiving a bill who believes they should have, needs to contact the collector's office in Jackson beginning Monday, said Collector Harold Kuehle.
"All the bills are out and by Monday everyone should have gotten theirs," said Kuehle.
Bills are for 1992 and are due by Dec. 31. Personal property tax bills are based on what was owned as of Jan. 1. Real estate tax bills are sent to the most recent owner the office had a record of.
This year, 28,448 real estate tax bills and 24,563 personal property bills were mailed out.
"If you didn't get a tax bill and own land, you had better let somebody know," stressed Kuehle.
He said it is possible the bill was sent to a previous owner, but suggested anyone with questions should call his office in Jackson at 243-4476.
Kuehle's office is responsible for collecting more than $18 million in taxes this year. Twenty-six years ago when Kuehle first took office, the charge was for $3.25 million.
The collector stressed that failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve a citizen of the requirement to pay, including interest and penalties that might accrue.
