JACKSON -- The Jackson Board of Aldermen has voted to impose a no-parking ban on a residential street near East Jackson Boulevard.

At its meeting Monday, it also opened bids for a new solid-waste truck and made preparations for the purchase of land to expand the city owned cemetery.

The 7-a.m.-to-5-p.m. no-parking ban will be imposed seven days a week on Gerald Street, eastward 203 feet from its intersection with Rosamund. The ban was imposed after residents complained of large trucks stopping on Gerald Street to unload at businesses on East Jackson Boulevard.

Six bids were received for the new truck. The bids were referred to Delbert Mouser, maintenance supervisor, for his review and recommendation. The low bid will be announced at the March 1 board meeting. Some of the bids received were for the truck chassis and body while the other bids included the truck chassis or body, but not both.

The board approved a resolution to notify the Federal Communications Commission that the city plans to adopt regulations pertaining to the operation of cable television service in the city. Cities are required to notify the FCC if they intend to regulate cable systems under cable legislation that was approved last year by Congress.

Also approved was an ordinance authorizing the city of Jackson to purchase an additional 3,000 kilowatt hours of electricity from the city of Jonesboro, Ark.

The board instructed the city engineer to conduct a survey of three-quarters of an acre of land on South Farmington. The city is considering purchasing the parcel to enlarge Russell Heights Cemetery. The land is adjacent to the cemetery.
