The people with the power to decide if Al Spradling will be back for a second term on the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents aren't making that decision yet.
When asked whether he supports another six-year term for Spradling, Sen. Jason Crowell, R-Cape Girardeau, said he wouldn't speak to hypotheticals.
"I have an opportunity to determine whether I will sponsor them [nominees] through the Senate process. If the governor nominates Al Spradling, I'll give him due consideration and make the determination at that point."
Spradling, a longtime Cape Girardeau lawyer and the city's former mayor, is in a political holding pattern. His term expired at the beginning of the year, although he continues to serve until either he or another nominee is confirmed. Regent Reginald Dickson, from St. Louis, is in the same situation.
Spradling said he has asked the senator to support his reappointment but hasn't heard anything from Crowell.
"Back in the middle of last year I wrote the senator and told him I was going to apply for reappointment," Spradling said. "I asked for his support, but I have not had any response.
"I assume by his silence he is not supporting me."
Spradling said Crowell encouraged him to seek appointment to the board six years ago. He said he hasn't heard from Gov. Jay Nixon's office, either.
Crowell would only say he will do what is best for the board of regents and the taxpayers of Missouri.
There are geographical and political considerations involved, including balance in Republican and Democrat representation. Senators sponsor regent nominees in their districts, and the governor makes appointments taking into account that support.
Nixon spokesman Scott Holste said he is not aware of any correspondence Crowell has sent to the governor concerning Spradling's reappointment. He could not say when Nixon would make a decision on the board of regents' seats.
"The governor certainly is aware those are terms that expired at the beginning of the year, and as he move foward make sure are qualified people in those positions," Holste said.
