SCOTT AFB, Ill. - The Air Force's Thunderbirds and the Army's parachute team, the Golden Knights, will take to the skies near Belleville again this year during Scott Air Force Base's 1993 Air Show.
The one-day show will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the air base east of Belleville. Gates will open at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, with activities scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. There is no admission or parking charge.
The Thunderbirds will perform one show in the afternoon while the Golden Knights are scheduled to make two jumps during the day.
Besides these aerial demonstrations, there will be other aircraft in flyovers and demonstrations, including a flyby of the F-117 stealth fighter and the B-1 bomber.
A large number of Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps military aircraft will also be on display. Many of them saw action in Operation Desert Storm. They range from the giant C-5A, C-141 Starlifter and C-130 Hercules cargo planes to a wide variety of jet aircraft. Personnel will be on hand to answer questions.
Cameras are allowed.
Inside the main hangar will be a number of interesting displays. Outside, there will be food stands serving snacks and cold drinks during the day.
To reach Scott AFB from the Cape Girardeau-Jackson area, take I-55 to the Perryville exit, go east on Highway 51, cross the Mississippi River at Chester, and turn right on Illinois Route 3. Go a short distance in Chester to the intersection of Route 3 and Route 150. Go north on Route 150 to the junction with Illinois Route 4. Stay on Route 4 and go north through Sparta, Fayetteville and Mascoutah, Ill. The south gate to the air base is just north of Mascoutah.
