SCOTT CITY -- Scott City residents who haven't posted a correct address on their home to coincide with a new house numbering system may receive a written warning, the City Council decided this week.
The warnings, being issued by police, give residents 15 days to post the correct house numbers or face a fine.
"The police are instructed to give written warnings to anyone not displaying a house number, displaying an incorrect number, or displaying a number that cannot be seen from across the street," said Mayor Shirley Young.
The mayor said the new numbering system has been in effect for months, but some residents haven't conformed. All residents were sent a letter months ago informing them they would have to change their address.
"We're in a dangerous situation here," she said. "The city and the post office are using these new numbers and some people have not posted the new ones."
Anyone who has questions about their number should call city hall. Meanwhile, police will be driving around checking house numbers.
"I think the city's been very patient in the amount of time we've allowed for this transition," the mayor said. "But it's time we get this completed."
