If ballad, blues, bossa and bop appeal to your music palate, Carol Comer can deliver all in the same evening.

Southeast Missouri State University's Cultural Programs Committee will play host to Comer March 17 at 8 p.m. in Academic Auditorium.

Recipient of the annual "Jazz Woman of the Year" award, Comer blends her wealth of experience and talent as a pianist, singer, composer, teacher and writer to offer an entertaining package.

She will be accompanied by Southeast's own "Faculty Three" featuring Dan Dunavan on drums, David Green on bass and Jerry Richardson on guitar.

Comer has achieved success in every creative endeavor she has undertaken. As a journalist Comer went from writing liner notes to being Kansas City's correspondent for one of the country's largest contemporary music magazines "Down Beat."

As a composer and member of ASCAP, she has had her original material recorded by Marilyn Maye, Matt Monroe and Sandler and Young.

As a teacher she has given clinics and workshops at the University of Northern Illinois, the University of Arkansas and Emporia State University. She has also conducted classes for the National Association of Jazz Educators and the Saskatchewan Arts Council.

She went from freelance copywriting to co-owning her own advertising agency. She is part owner in an advertising agency and music publishing company called Blue Tree.

The Kansas City Jazz Commission honored Comer with a 1992 Jazz Heritage Award "in appreciation and admiration for contributions that have helped establish and perpetuate the style of music known around the world as "Kansas City Jazz."

Comer will conduct a jazz workshop at 2 p.m. Thursday prior to the evening concert. "It's like an excursion into melodic and harmonic improvisation, ideation and phrasing," said Comer.

The workshop will take place at Brandt Music Hall in Room 205 and is open to the public.

Some music and jazz knowledge is recommended. On Friday, March 18, she will join the university's jazz band in the University Center Ballroom at 8 p.m.

General admission is $4. Senior citizens and students will be admitted for $2.
