Firefighters were able to control a cooking fire using a fire extinguisher within minutes of arrival at 1457 N. Main St. early Friday following a call at 2:15 a.m. Remaining embers were put out with water within 10 to 15 minutes. Capt. Ray Warner was on the scene with his crew for about an hour and determined the cause to be cooking with grease that had gotten too hot and boiled over when food was added, catching the stove on fire. A man, woman and baby escaped without injury. "They did the proper thing," Warner said. "They gathered everyone up and got out." The fire itself and efforts to put it out caused damage to the stove, wall behind it and ceiling. Smoke damage to the rest of the rental property was minimal. The fire department estimated damage at around $20,000.
