McCLURE, Ill. -- An Ullin man was killed Monday on the Grapevine Trail between McClure and Tamms.

An Illinois State Police report said Alfred C. Payne, 27, was eastbound on the highway at 4 p.m. when he crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road, and slid sideways into the path of oncoming traffic in an attempt to right his car.

Payne was killed when his car collided with a car driven by Debra Buie, 42, of Tamms, who sustained major injuries and was taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She remained hospitalized in fair condition Tuesday night.

A passenger in her car, Marty Henderson, 18, of Thebes, also suffered injuries and was taken to Southeast. He was treated and released.
