An unidentified picketer, picketed the Charmin Paper Products Co. plant expansion site. He was protesting the laying off of six Cape Girardeau County union members. Approximately 200 members of Laborers Local 282 refused to cross the one-man picket line to work.

The Kimbeland Country Club women's golf team of Peggy Fee, Florence Lewis, Harriet Jaegger, Linda Metheny, Betty Roth, Jean Sander, Evelyn Puls, Polly Rawlings, LaVerne Bangert and Jean Byrd scored the best 10-member aggregate score to win the tri-club tournament between Kimbeland, Cape Country Club and the Jaycee Club.

Martin Hecht, Vernon H. Landgraf and Ralph Edwards purchased a substantial amount of stock in the Jackson Exchange Bank totaling about 40 percent of the bank's total stock. The three men are a part of five investors interested in putting in a fourth bank in Cape Girardeau.

Wheat threshing dinners were served at the Herman Zschille farm as threshing of wheat and oats on the farm and some rented land required two days. Other threshing dinners were served north of Oak Ridge at Ray Engler's farm and Ben Peetz's farm.

Articles of incorporation of the Absogood Packing Co., of Jackson, have been filed for record. The shareholders are Paul J. Leonard and Milton Ostrowsky of Jackson, S. Steinberg of New York City and Jack O. Knehans of Cape Girardeau. The corporation will produce and sell eggs, poultry and ice and their by-products.

Jackson tax rate for the year has been fixed at $1.10 on the $100 valuation by City Council. This is an increase of 10 cents over the previous rate. The financial report by city treasurer Mrs. Freda Gockel for the first six months of the fiscal year showed $78,661.30 in receipts and $117,828.86 in disbursements with a bank balance of $90,482.31.

Jackson Schools need two new teachers at the high school. A science teacher is needed to replace Walter Swan, who resigned, and an industrial arts teacher to succeed W.E. La Monte who will supervise the diversified occupations program. Mrs. Robert Goza, Jr. has succeeded Mrs. Daisy Statler as secretary of the Board of Education and to Supt. E.O. Hawkins. Mrs. Statler resigned effective July 1.

The coal shortage is making itself felt here more and more all the time. It became necessary to shut off the street lights leaving the town in darkness. The nation was experiencing a coal shortage that caused similar conservation measures across the country.

The funeral of the late Judge William B. Schaeffer was held at St. Paul Lutheran Church. News of the death spread gloom across the city at once since Judge Schaeffer had been so closely identified with the city even though he had been removed from the city for sometime.

Farmers are constantly appealing to the officers here to construe the Volstead Act in regard to making cider. There is a world of apples this year, and no market for them. The only remedy to save the crop is the expensive process of evaporating or the conversion of the apple into cider or vinegar. Apple juice won't keep very long before fermentation sets in. Folks wanting to abide by the law are asking how to produce good apple vinegar without alcoholic content.
