Graduate of Jackson High School and member of Future Farmers of America chapter here, Ronald Huffman, has been recommended to receive American Famer Degree, highest degree of membership for students of vocational agriculture; award will be presented during National FFA Convention to be held in Kansas City Oct. 11-13.

Twenty-eighth annual Marching Band Festival Tuesday will bring more than 1,950 bandsmen into Jackson from high schools over Southeast Missouri area; it is sponsored by Southeast Missouri Band Association; day's activities will get under way with parade through Jackson business district in morning; in afternoon, 27 bands will rehearse for massed formations which will climax night performance in Jackson High School gymnasium.

Main item of business before Jackson City Council Monday night was zoning hearing in which proposed change was withdrawn but new proposal submitted; involved was request by Riverside Land and Investment Co. to rezone block four of Rolling Hills Subdivision from single to multi-family residential.

50 years ago, 1947

John Schulte has enrolled at Washington University school of pharmacy in St. Louis; he had been employed at Jones Drug Store while attending State College in Cape Girardeau.

At County Court meeting Monday, delegation was heard regarding graveling of a rural road, but since R.R. Bedwell, highway engineer, is ill, that work has been delayed.

Workers for the Rev. H.H. Colter, contractor for painting exterior of county courthouse, plan to begin work Wednesday; windows, metal laths above entrances, and doorways on outside will be given two coats of paint or varnish.

Boys of Future Farmers of America exhibiting and taking part in judging contests at Mid-South Fair at Memphis, Tenn., last week earned total of $145 in prize money and R.C. Kasten scored highest points to be declared best judge; judging team of Dale Baker, Paul Ray Dow and Kasten also took first place in livestock judging.

75 years ago, 1922

Jackson High School football team returned here Friday night from Marble Hill after defeating Will Mayfield College football team in first game of season, 18-6; wide end runs and forward passing featured contest; Bobby Illers, backfield man, played his last game with local eleven; he is over age limit for high school football and was used in this game as it was contest with junior college.

County campaign was formally opened Saturday by J.F. Fulbright, candidate for Congress from 14th District, who made speech before crowd that packed courtroom to its full capacity; convention was called to order by Russell L. Dearmont, chairman of central committee, and Edward L. Drum was chosen chairman of convention and J.E. Schmuke secretary.

Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Dell of St. Louis have taken rooms with J.H. Daugherty; Dell is supervisor of Kroger Store; he has some 13 stores under his supervision in Southeast Missouri.

F.R. Meyer has sold house and five lots in Morgan's Second Addition in West Jackson to Leona Voshage, who, with her husband, occupies premises.

Ollie English has returned from Glendale, Ariz., to make Jackson his home.
