Money through five different state and federal programs has been funneling through office of Cape Girardeau County Treasurer Ruth Meadows to schools in county in recent days; largest block of funds has been staid apportionment for September, with Cape Girardeau schools receiving largest amount, $391,061; amounts received by others included Jackson, $271,480; Delta R-5, $64,894; Oak Ridge R-6, $32,426, and Nell Holcomb R-4, $35,264.

Clarence Lee Shirrell's offer to build Jackson Chamber of Commerce an office building has been accepted by chamber; building, which will be constructed on Jackson Ready Mix property at Highways 61 and 25, will be between 500 and 700 square feet in size and of concrete construction; Shirrell will retain title of building, but chamber will be able use structure as long as it desires.

Jackson Broadcasting Co., operator of radio station KJAS, is interest in applying to City Council for cable television franchise; John A. Raymond, general Manager, says company is making preliminary engineering and feasibility studies for a CATV system for Jackson.

50 years ago: 1947

Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Schneider have received word from their daughter, Mrs. Ben H. Ruff, who lives in Navy Point, Fla., that she was unharmed in recent hurricane; telegram from Mrs. Olin Hartsfield and children in West Palm Beach, Fla., to Dr. and Mrs. T.E. Wilson also stated they were safe.

Jackson Chamber of Commerce has voted its full support to Public Library movement for bond issue to erect new building.

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Clark have moved into their new house on West Main Street; they formerly lived in the Floyd Hahs house; Clark is electrician; new house has five rooms and bath on first floor, and two rooms and half-bath on second.

Steel work for frozen food locker plant is being put in place by force of workers; building is under construction by Cape Girardeau locker company which will operate plant in Jackson also; building is on lot bought recently from Martin H. Schloss, near Highway 25.

75 years ago: 1922

Management of new Kroger Store has received its opening stock of goods, and salesmen are busy arranging merchandise on shelves.

Manning Sample of Glen Allen in Bollinger County passed through Jackson the other morning on his way to Cape girardeau to fair; while here he spoke of road improvements on Jackson-Marble Hill Road at point where it crosses Hog Creek; high bluff on west bank of creek is being removed with dynamite, and broad and properly-graded roadway blasted out of solid rock; bridge over Hog Creek, condemned some years ago, has been repaired and is open to public.

Pride Baby Shoe Co., Inc., of St. Louis, has asked Jackson Chamber of Commerce what would be chances of getting cooperation of residents to build plant here which would manufacture about 1,500 pairs daily of their "stitchdown" shoes; plant must be in operation by Jan. 1.

Work on new plant of International Shoe Co. has begun and will be pushed to completion before winter weather stops operations in building industry.

Louis Schmidt has sold his house on Daisy Avenue, in West Jackson, to Elbert McFerron, who will make it his future home.

August H. Voshage has moved his family and belongings from Koechig farm to Jackson and occupies former Deimund property in Morgan's Third Addition.
