Public hearing on proposed 1973 county budget is scheduled for Jan. 25 at County Court room of County Courthouse; budget is up about $74,000 over 1972 for general revenue purposes; proposed budget calls for $978,474 in expenditures.

Thurman Shelton, Jackson police officer, has been elected president of Southeast Missouri Peace Officers Association; he succeeds Lt. W.G. Wilson of Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Concordia Seminary Chorus of St. Louis, ensemble of 68 male voices under direction of Dr. William B. Heyne, presented sacred concert in public school auditorium Sunday

Skaters are having merry time on two large ponds near Jackson -- Tindall Lake north of light plant and Gladish pond west of Jackson; more than dozen couples skated Sunday afternoon at Tindall Lake and Monday afternoon many youngsters were also there; in warding off extreme cold, large fire was built at each place.

In short meeting of City Council Monday, council reviewed it's order made number of years ago in regard to trash collection last Wednesday of each month; three days were spent in January by city workers in removing trash from curbs; council asked for cooperation of citizens and requested that ashes, tree limbs, etc., not be placed with collections; all trash must be at curbs at 9 a.m.

Paul Harris Loos, son of Mrs. Adam H. Loos, has entered St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau to begin his nine-year study for priesthood; following two years ow work at St. Vincent's College, he will enter Perryville seminary and upon completion of his course he will be subject to chaplain duty or missionary work.

When Jacob Kneibert Jr., 56 years old, died Jan. 22 of influenza, it was third death in Kneibert family within past two weeks; Jacob Kneibert Sr., 82, died two weeks ago at his home here after short illness and asthma; the elder Kneibert's wife died short time before that; Jacob Kneibert Sr. was unassuming man, and in disposition with pleasant word for all he was Union veteran of Civil War and for several years operated grocery store here; Annie Kneibert, sister of Jacob Kneibert Jr. is critically ill also.

Families of Adolph Keis, Louis Kies and E. Kies are recovering from influenza.

Jim Bowman has purchased beautiful home of J.F. Caldwell and will occupy it as soon as some alterations are made; Hinkle Bowman will move in with his father in the Dr. F.R. Atkins home, so as to vacate the bungalow for Blucher Sperling and wife.

Charles Sievers and his entire family are confined to their beds with influenza; Sievers is employee of Sanders Hardware Co; firm has been hard hit lately; Judge William Sanders has been very ill and Eli Abernathy, another store clerk, has been quite ill for 10 days.
