Mrs. L.A. Kinder has been elected president of Jackson Garden Club for 1973; vice president is Mrs. Robert Buerkle; secretary, Mrs. Glen Boyer, and treasurer, Mrs. Andrew Perrin.
Variety of matters came before Jackson Betterment Association at its recent meeting; Mrs. F.E. Keen gave report concerning new swimming pool and park land development; City Council has hired consulting engineer to have plans drawn for development of new park land as to where pool should be located and what type of pool is needed for this area; she also reported that picnic shelter is being built in City Park near tennis courts.
Although no decision has been made as yet, Count Court has serious reservations regarding purchase of new fire truck for County Volunteer Fire Department; Office of Disaster Planning and Operations, formerly Civil Defense, has requested $21,092 for new fire engine; Presiding Judge Clarence W. Suedekum has said truck may not be answer to county's fire protection needs, pointing out that in many cases, Jackson-based volunteer unit is unable to get to fire in time to be effective; it is simply matter of distance.
Annexation plan may be ready for City Council action at its next regular meeting Feb. 5, Mayor Paul J. Leonard announced at council meeting Monday night; he said council committees have been discussing annexation since public hearing on initial proposal last summer.
50 years ago, 1948
Andrew W. Kinder farm lying just south of city limits of Jackson has been sold, one parcel of 68 acres adjoining city becoming property of Kasten Brothers Brick Co. and remainder, 87 acres, being purchased by John M.C. Kasten, to be used for farming and stock production; first tract has been analyzed on basis of clay for brick making and found to be equal to clay now being used by Kasten Brothers.
Norman Willa, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Willa, received painful injuries Friday night while participating in tumbling act as special feature presented by physical education department of grade school between basketball games in gymnasium; Willa sustained broken shoulder blade and fractured wrist when he fell.
Board of Education, at its meeting this week, went on record as favoring distribution of county and township capital school fund; board also retired last outstanding bond on $20,000 gymnasium issue, sold July 15, 1928; only indebtedness of district at this time are bonds on grade school, $51,000.
Farmers in this area shipped 110 railroad cars of livestock during 1947 through Cape Girardeau County Livestock Shipping Association at Jackson; shipments through association brought farmers total of $410,770.87.
75 years ago, 1923
Douglass, 4-year-old nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brennecke, with whom he lives, is very ill with typhoid pneumonia at their home in west Jackson; child's father, Joseph Sneathen, of St. Louis, has been with them this week; child's mother is deceased.
Attorney Orren Wilson has purchased mill formerly owned by John W. Brown; he was acting for other parties in making purchase; Brown filed bankruptcy proceedings several months ago, and his mill was sold for benefit of his creditors.
Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Wagner have "broken up housekeeping" and have taken rooms with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Wagner; they will board there until houses are more plentiful; McAtee home where younger Wagners had lived was sold last week to Hubert Steele, who will occupy it.
Jackson public school presented unusual treat Tuesday at Orpheum Theater; Jackson Dramatic Club performed "A Regiment of Two," sparkling comedy by Anthony E. Wills; playing bigger roles were Jacob Loos, Frank Medley, Lucille Medley, Mrs. Jacob Loos, Margaret Koehler, Ed Medley, Edna Loos, Albert Loos, Joseph Hoeckele, and Michael Heisserer.
