District officials have worked out contract details for purchase of building site for new elementary school building to serve Fruitland-Pocahontas area of Jackson R-2 School District; district will purchase 14.27 acres of land at Fruitland at cost of $15,697 from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hoffmeister; land adjoins property on which present Fruitland Schools is located, extending to south and east.
Thomas S. Smith Jr. of Jackson has been promoted to team manager position at Charmin Paper Products Co. plant, bringing to 13 number of promotions to management since first employees were hired in 1969; Smith, now undergoing training for his new position, initially joined Charmin in October 1969 in production line operating and maintenance assignment; he is native of Jackson and graduate of Jackson High School.
Jackson R-2 Supt. Frank A. Wiley reported to school board Tuesday night that letters have been sent to merchants outlining solicitations sanctioned by school district; he reported that recently there have been persons soliciting in Jackson area who apparently gave false impression they were sponsored by school district.

William J. Wolters has purchased Malone Coal & Ice Co.; in future Wolters Coal and Transfer Co. will be merged with Molone company and will be housed in building south of T.L. St. Clair home on Highway 25; in purchasing business, Wolters sold his service station interest in St. Clair station on West Main to Roy Humes and Jake Clingingsmith, who will be sole owners; Purl G. Malone, former owner of Malone company, will associate with Riverside Lumber Co. of Cape Girardeau.
Arthur John Kennedy of St. Louis was speaker at dedication ceremonies for new Lincoln (Negro) School Sunday afternoon; Kennedy is graduate of Tuskegee Institute and during war was vocational instructor in trade schools in St. Louis; Mrs. Ralph Smith, teacher of school, led the children in singing number of songs; 40 children were in attendance at new brick school Monday morning; school cost in neighborhood of $16,000.
County Court appointed Troy Haupt superintendent of County Home from list of several applicants; John Horrell, present superintendent, wasn't applicant and spoke in support of Haupt; Haupt is farmer of near Jackson; Horrell has been at county farm for two years and will return to his own farm east of Jackson.
Tract of 811.76 acres of land in northern part of county along Mississippi River has been sold to Lloyd Crites by James H. and Mae Adams; much of acreage is former J.M. Cotner land lying in sections 17 and 18 west of river and along Apple Creek; consideration was reported near $14,000.
75 years ago, 1923
George Loos, while cutting down tree on his farm near town Tuesday, was struck down by limb as it fell, cutting gash in his wrist which caused great loss of blood from which he fainted; he is confined to his bed, but is resting comfortably.
Emanuel Milde, 40 years old, manager and part owner of E. Milde Bottling Works at Jackson, died Jan. 5 in Cape Girardeau, succumbing to attack of influenza following operation for appendicitis.
County Court expects to meet next Monday to consider buying equipment for new County Home; board will visit home and make estimate of what is needed.
Blucher Sperling has sold his large bungalow to W.A. Hyde, consideration being $5,500; Sperling will move into his new stucco bungalow on South First West Street.
Helen Milde, trained nurse from Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, is home nursing her mother, Mrs. Louis Milde, who is down with influenza.
