Jackson Jazz Band and The Jerry Ford Orchestra performed at the recent Big Band Gala at the Jackson High School's old gym.
With most attendees in formal attire, it was like entering a club, darkened, complete with disco ball and refreshments. A two-liter bottle of pop and a large bag of popcorn for only $3 was available at the bar.
Pat Schwent, leader of the Jackson Jazz Band, said students were treated like professionals. They were expected to be ready on time, properly dressed and with the proper attitude. The jazz band is one students had to audition for. Schwent, who performs professionally, wanted the students to have the opportunity for dancing, listening and playing. It truly was a cultural event.
The first set played by Jackson Jazz Band included tunes like "In The Mood," "Perdido," "Little Darlin'," "Lichtensteiner Polka," "Paper Moon," "Moon River" and "Kansas City," to name a few. Layne Beeller, Matt Parisch, Erica Beasley and Blake Burress sang wonderfully during this set.
Because Schwent knows students do not have the endurance to play a three- or four-hour set, the Jerry Ford Orchestra graciously performed the second set. The cooperation from this big band includes the lending of 20 to 30 charts for high school use along with their own, and the very important role as mentors for budding musicians.
The Jerry Ford Orchestra played tunes such as "All of Me," "You Go to My Head," "Rock Around The Clock," "Silhouette" and "Jump, Jive and Wail," to name a few.
This was the third year for the event that provided a cultural evening for the community.
