SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Sikeston Department of Public Safety is investigating the Sunday evening shooting of a 9-year-old girl.

According to a news release from Lt. Jim McMillen, police were notified just after 6 p.m. that a 9-year-old girl was being transported to a hospital with a gunshot wound to her left shoulder. The girl and her 11-year-old brother were reportedly in their father's bedroom when the boy picked up their father's loaded .40-caliber pistol and shot the girl, the release said. Family members took the girl to the hospital and called 911, the release said.

Investigators are conducting interviews to determine if the shooting was accidental or intentional, McMillen said in the release. Hospital personnel expect the girl to recover from the injury, the release said.
