The annual Eagle Scout Court of Honor held Saturday honored 62 Boy Scouts from 19 Southeast Missouri and 10 Southern Illinois counties who earned Eagle rank during 1998.
Missouri Sen. Peter D. Kinder was the class sponsor and main speaker at the Court of Honor held at Academic Hall on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.
Dr. James A. Kinder was chairman of the event. Mike Shain, KFVS news anchor, presented the Eagle Scouts.
The ceremony was preceded by a luncheon. Each of the Eagle Scouts had an opportunity to meet with an individual whose vocation matches the career interest of the Eagle Scout.
Thirty-four troops are represented in the 1998 Eagle class. Scouts from 24 communities comprise the group.
To become an Eagle Scout, 21 merit badges, including 12 specifically required, must be earned; a major service project must be planned and completed; and the responsibilities of several leadership positions in the troop must be fulfilled.
After completing all requirements, a board of review is given by the troop and district before the application is submitted to the national office of the Boy Scouts of America for final approval.
Only 2 percent of all Scouts obtain the Eagle Award.
