COLLINSVILLE, Ill. -- A three-vehicle crash in Southern Illinois killed six people, including five family members, authorities said Sunday.

The chain-reaction crash, which also injured two others, happened Saturday evening near Belleville, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Roger Hayes said.

Gary Ohren was driving a minivan carrying family members ages 7 to 64 when an oncoming sport utility vehicle crossed into their lane, hitting the family's van head-on, Hayes said.

"We don't know why he crossed over," Hayes said.

Two others were injured when their car, traveling behind Ohren's, slammed into the SUV, police said.

The victims in the minivan were Ohren, 40, and four family members: Lora, 39; Cody, 12; Emily, 7; and Judy, 64. The driver of the SUV, Myron Schanuel, 39, also died, Hayes said.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation, Hayes said.
