Shortly after noon, the school resource officer again requested assistance, saying he had been physically assaulted by a student on the school campus.

Officers saw the student, Christopher Lee Joyner, 17, of Steele, running off campus when they arrived; he was apprehended shortly thereafter. Joyner was transported to the Steele Police Department, where he was processed, and was later jailed at the Pemiscot County Justice Center.

According to the school resource officer, Joyner became unruly and was told he needed to report to the principal's office. Joyner subsequently became violent toward the resource officer, who then used pepper spray on Joyner. The officer said it was at this point that Joyner attacked him.

Joyner was later charged with first-degree assault on a police officer. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.
