The Southeast Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics recognized three area teachers as outstanding mathematics educators at the ninth annual fall conference on school science and mathematics.
Martha Short, who has taught 17 years in Jackson, was given the award for the elementary math teacher. She currently is the elementary vice president of the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
She is also a Missouri Assessment Senior leader for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and is on the State Interface Committee.
Shelby Shell, in her 18th year at Cape Central Junior High School received the middle school award. Shell has taught for 37 years and has presented numerous programs at local, state and national mathematics conferences. She is the site coordinator for the junior high school mathematics conferences sponsored by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Dr. Wendell Wyatt, a 30-year veteran teacher at Southeast Missouri State University received the secondary-postsecondary award.
He had served two terms as the council's president and editor of the council's newsletter for 17 years. He recently relinquished his position as director of council's elementary math contests.
The conference, sponsored by the Godwin Center for Science & Math Education, was held at the University Center on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.
