WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THIS NOMINEE DEMONSTRATES THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA?

The American Legion Post 178, proudly places in nomination for the Spirit of America Award, Roy "Buddy" Walls.

The son of a commercial fisherman, Buddy was taught responsibility at an early age. "Don't wait to be asked, offer to help," was the family motto. This motto set the stage for Buddy's entire life.

After graduating high school, Buddy married his high-school sweetheart, Vicki Johnson, and has been married for 48 years.

Buddy joined the Air Force after being married 3 months.

Following the family motto once again, Buddy volunteered for a tour in Vietnam and served in 1970-1971. While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded the prestigious Gun Fighter of the Month award for heroic service beyond the call of duty. He was awarded an Honorable Discharge in 1972 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Buddy began a career in the insurance industry, while attending college full time for seven years at night. He later served as president of Shawnee College Foundation Board.

He served four years as Pulaski County commissioner and was chairman for two years. He is a lifetime member of the VFW, Chaplin of American Legion, Commander of Sons of American Legion, working with youth. He serves as chaplain on the Area Ritual Team and averages 60 funerals a year for our fallen heroes!

Buddy became an ordained minister in 1999, and is now a pastor of Mound City Baptist Church and volunteers to preach at Daystar Nursing Home and visits hospitals throughout the tri-state area.

He serves on the Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission always striving to help where needed.
