A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in the shooting of a Mounds, Illinois, police officer.
About 7 a.m. Wednesday, Mounds officers responded to a report of an armed subject attempting to break into a residence, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.
When police arrived at the home in the 900 block of Third Street, the suspect and an officer exchanged gun fire.
The officer suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to an out-of-state hospital, the release said.
The boy fled on foot and was taken into custody after being released from a local hospital, where he sought medical attention for a minor gunshot wound, a second news release from state police said.
The boy has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery of a police officer with a firearm, according to the Illinois State Police.
He is being held at the Franklin County Youth Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
