FROHNA -- The smell of apple butter cooking is sure to lure a few passers-by to the Saxon Lutheran Memorial Saturday.
The memorial is holding the 15th annual Saxon Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
About 3,500 visitors are expected for the cooking and craft demonstrations, said Hilda Snyder, local curator.
Cooking apple butter is just one of the working demonstrations planned throughout the day. Other working crafts include soap making, fence making, wood carving and spinning. All demonstrators will be dressed in period clothing.
A special performance by the "Kinderchor" will be held at 1 p.m. Students from the Trinity Lutheran School will sing traditional German folk songs.
Additional entertainment will be provided during the afternoon. KFUO radio from St. Louis will be the host of a live broadcast.
The memorial is on an old farmstead. The land was purchased in 1961 and buildings were renovated.
Tours of the log cabin and barns are available. Regular hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The Visitor's Center and gift shop also will be open during the festival.
To get to the Saxon Lutheran Memorial, take U.S. Highway 61 to Uniontown. Then take Highway A for six miles to Frohna. Turn onto Highway C and follow the signs to Saxon Memorial Drive.
Victor and Hilda Snyder are resident curators at the memorial, which is owned by the Concordia Historical Institute in St. Louis.
