An effort to stop drunken driving netted 10 people on charges of driving while intoxicated between Aug. 19 and Monday, Cape Girardeau police reported.
With the help of a $1,000 federal grant, the department was able to put extra officers on patrol as part of the "You Drink and Drive, You Lose" campaign.
During the enforcement effort, officers issued 13 traffic tickets, 10 of which were for driving while intoxicated, police said. Two tickets were for seat-belt violations and the other was for a violation not specified in the police news release.
The federal grant paid for overtime to allow more officers to be on the road at times patrols would be most likely to encounter drunken drivers. "We feel this program was very successful," traffic Sgt. Jack Wimp said in the release.
