The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 221 in St. Francois County, and the ATV went out of control, left the road and struck a pole before flipping into a ditch.

Driver Benjamin Nounce, 35, of Farmington was flown to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries. Passenger Jason Holbert, 34, of Ironton was pronounced dead at the scene.
