Bald Knob Cross

For millions around the globe the cross is a reminder of grace given through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Alto Pass, Ill., the Bald Knob Cross of Peace -- a structure that stands 111 feet high -- is a landmark many have given money and time to see restored so future generations may visit and reflect.

The cross, an attraction hundreds of people visit every week, had deteriorated over the past 48 years, and a group called Friends of the Cross has been hard at work to raise the funds necessary for its restoration.

Since 2007 more than $500,000 has been raised for the project. With insulated panels now installed -- something the original cross did not have, thus leading to its deterioration -- the restoration of the cross is nearly complete.

The next step is to install lighting. Jeff Lingle, president of Friends of the Cross, said for that to happen the group needs to raise about $15,000 more. As part of the effort to raise the money, the group will hold a fundraising event called Cross Walk 2011 on Oct. 22.

The restoration of the cross has not been without obstacles. From a lawsuit to fundraising in a difficult economy, among other challenges, the group has persevered.
