Committed to excellence

For decades the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce has recognized businesses and organizations that play a significant role in the community.

In years past, the chamber bestowed an "Industry of the Year" award on one deserving business. Now that award has been renamed the "Commitment to Excellence" award because it better represents what the honor recognizes.

This year's recipient is an especially outstanding choice for such recognition.

The United Way of Southeast Missouri fits all the criteria for the award:

The United Way is a chamber member; has an office in the region and provides service to the area; and as well as being involved in the community, the agency demonstrates a commitment to excellence.

Through grants to community agencies and programs that help everyone from young children to senior adults, the United Way shows its commitment to the region. More than 90 percent of the money raised by the United Way stays here to fund local programs or agencies.

A recent community assessment process demonstrated the United Way's leadership efforts in helping the region address problems like transportation needs, affordable medical care, substance abuse and family issues.

In its 50-year local history, the United Way has done everything with a commitment to excellence.
