THE PUBLIC MIND: MORE HEAT THAN LIGHT HAS BEEN GENERATED OVER THOMAS' APPOINTMENT

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

Dear Editor:

In a recent column in your publication, Mona Charen accused blacks of "pusillanimity." I can't remember whether she wanted to demonstrate her journalist prowess or if she hoped to send readers in droves scurrying for their dictionary (I did find it in mine). It's doubtful, however that she succeeded in either one.

Regarding the Clarence Thomas U.S. Supreme Court appointment (which is what the column is about )...already, more heat than light is being generated. It seems that Judge Thomas will ultimately be confirmed. He is not eminently qualified as George Bush would assert...but he is the best politically qualified. If (or when) his appointment is confirmed, he will probably do a decent, faithful job. For such political appointees, that's pretty darn good.

Meanwhile, the exchange over his appointment promises to be a simplistic, conservative/liberal (and vice-versa), name-calling and "know-nothing" one.
