LETTERS: TELL GOVERNOR TO VETO HELMET LAW

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

To the editor:

Several weeks ago, our Missouri legislators passed Senate Bill 294, which repeals the motorcycle helmet law. This bill now sits on Gov. Mel Carnahan's desk. He has told his advisers that he is inclined to veto this dangerous bill if there is enough grass-roots support for him to do so. He needs Missouri voters to speak up so this unwise bill is not made into law.

More citizens need to tell him to veto this bill.

Please consider writing, faxing, e-mailing or phoning Governor Carnahan on this important issue. Even a handwritten two or three lines can have a great impact on our elected officials.

Those opposed to mandatory use of motorcycle helmets believe this is a freedom-of-choice issue. I believe in this case choice is outweighed by the rights of those who love motorcycle riders as family and friends to keep them healthy and safe. Traumatic brain injury takes that away from us. Helmets do save lives and reduce injury.
