LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: MAJORITY RULE? IT SHOULD APPLY TO PUBLIC PRAYER

To the editor:

There has been quite a bit of discussion about prayer before sporting events lately. It seems to me that the majority of people in the United States believe in a God -- not necessarily the same God, but a God. If the problem is about individual rights, then what has become of the rights of the majority?

If the U.S. Supreme Court and the federal government want the United States to be an atheistic society, then the U.S. Treasury should remove the statement, "In God We Trust," from all U.S. paper currency. If it is not the intent of the Supreme Court and the federal government for the United States to be an atheistic society, then I would think if a voter were taken at any gathering of U.S. citizens, the majority would rule and a group prayer could or could not be held.
