To the editor:

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau, I want to thank the Southeast Missourian for its excellent coverage of the club's Soap Box Derby.

The visibility created by newspaper coverage was valuable in promoting this exciting event. The Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau is proud to be a sponsor of the Soap Box Derby, and we are gratified by the outpouring of community support.

St. Francis Medical Center, as our corporate sponsor, has been instrumental in developing the Soap Box Derby into an event that the community can be proud of. Our other sponsors, car owners and drivers have contributed time, energy and financial support in order to create a positive, family-oriented, fun race.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department, ambulance service and public schools are important partners in our efforts, and we are grateful for their cooperation and support.

A special thank you and congratulations to the 41 boys and girls who built their cars, practiced and competed with energy, focus and good sportsmanship. The smiles on their faces and the faces of friends and family members spoke loudly of the benefits of the Soap Box Derby.

The proceeds from the Soap Box Derby will be used by the club to assist numerous community programs as well as support both national and international Rotary programs.

Again, thank you for your support. The Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau is already looking forward to the 2002 Soap Box Derby, and we hope to enlist the Southeast Missourian's support next year.
