Fall sports

Somehow another summer has slipped away, and we already have embarked on another school year.

This means many things for our schools, not the least of which is the start of fall sports season.

Aside from politics, nothing seems to stir the emotions quite like sports, especially when our young athletes are representing all high schools and communities.

As we enter the fall competition, we'd like to offer good wishes and luck to all area athletes, particularly when it comes to their health. We hope and pray those who become injured recover quickly and thoroughly. We want to remind our local coaches to be careful with their players. The impulsive nature of competition can cloud judgment when it comes to athletes wanting to play. It's up to the adults to understand when a player needs to sit for his or her protection. Your athletes are sons and daughters. Please treat them as such.

We'd also like to remind fans, friends and parents to please show good sportsmanship this fall. There is no gain from taunting opponents, berating officials or gloating. Please represent your hardworking athletes with class, no matter the score, no matter the officials' mistakes.

Sports were invented to have fun and gain exercise, so let's have some. Here's to a wonderful season of fall sports.

Let the games begin.
