Heat safety

We've had a few warm days this month, but if this year is like previous ones locally, we are likely in store for plenty of hot and humid days yet this summer.

Last week the heat index surpassed 100 degrees in Cape Girardeau. Along with the humidity, temperatures were in the low- to mid-90s. This type of weather is wonderful if you're staying cool in the pool. But for those working outdoors or without air-conditioning, it can be dangerous.

The Centers for Disease Control has several tips for avoiding heat-related illnesses. A full list can be found on the CDC's website, but here are a few:

* Drink plenty of water -- even if you're not thirsty. Try to avoid alcohol or high-sugar drinks.

* Stay in air-conditioned buildings or find an air-conditioned shelter.

* Wear clothes that are lightweight and light-colored.

Also, be mindful of others -- including children, the elderly and those working outside. If you have outdoor pets, make sure they have plenty of water in a shady area.

There are so many fun things to do in the summer, but please be safe in the heat and take appropriate precautions.
