The Southeast Missouri State baseball team didn't let Tuesday's lopsided loss at perennial national power Arkansas linger.
Southeast bounced back to rally past the 16th-ranked Razorbacks 6-5 on Wednesday night.
The Redhawks, who dropped the series opener 10-0, improved to 28-17 while dropping the Razorbacks to 30-14.
"Our guys laid everything they had on the line. It was a great win against a tremendous program," said Southeast coach Mark Hogan, whose squad has won four of the last five meetings with Arkansas, including a two-game series sweep in 2002.
Southeast led much of the way but found itself behind 5-3 after seven innings.
The Redhawks rallied with three eighth-inning runs, getting four of their nine hits in the frame, to notch their first win over a ranked opponent since beating 16th-ranked Alabama in 2009.
"We've had a lot of big wins late. Tonight was another example," Hogan said. "I couldn't be prouder of the team."
Junior third baseman Trenton Moses walked to start the eighth inning. Senior DH Brett Russell followed with a single, sending Moses to third.
A wild pitch allowed Russell to take second. Senior center fielder Blake Slattery's one-out ground ball scored Moses to make it 5-4.
Southeast then continued its two-out magic. Senior pinch-hitter Louie Haseltine's double brought home Russell to forge a 5-5 tie.
Senior catcher Ky Burgess followed with a single that plated redshirt freshman pinch-runner Cole Bieser with what proved to be the winning run.
"We had guys step up and come through with big hits," said Hogan, who saw the Redhawks get five of their six runs with two outs.
Senior left-hander Logan Mahon nailed down the victory as he continued his brilliant season out of the bullpen.
Mahon received credit for the win, improving to 5-3 along with seven saves.
Mahon allowed two hits, struck out two and walked none in 2 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 1.86.
"He was spectacular," Hogan said. "He just continued to have an outstanding year."
Southeast grabbed a 2-0 first-inning lead. Adamson and Moses drew two-out walks. They scored on a double by Russell.
Arkansas got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Southeast made it 3-1 in the fourth. Slattery singled with one out, went to second on a ground ball and came around on a two-out single by Burgess.
The Razorbacks answered in the fourth to pull within 3-2. That's the way things stood until the sixth.
Arkansas went ahead 4-3 despite having just one hit as Southeast committed a key error.
The Razorbacks added their last run in the seventh, setting the stage for Southeast's final rally.
Senior left-hander Jordan Underwood, Southeast's No. 1 starter for conference play, allowed two runs and three hits over the first three-plus innings. He struck out two and walked three.
"He threw really well," Hogan said.
Senior Trent Wise fired off two scoreless innings before being relieved with two on and one out in the sixth. Both runners scored, one unearned, and were charged to Wise. He gave up just one hit in a season-high 2 1/3 innings.
"He did a nice job. Without him we don't win the game," Hogan said.
Sophomore Shae Simmons, who relieved Wise, was charged with the seventh-inning run, which was unearned, before Mahon shut the door.
Burgess and Russell both had two hits and two RBIs. Junior shortstop Kenton Parmley added two hits.
Freshman Ryne Stanek, who was drafted in the third round by the Mariners last year, started for Arkansas and was impressive.
Stanek pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He struck out two and walked four.
The Redhawks now have nine days off from competition before visiting Austin Peay on May 14 and 15 for a big Ohio Valley Conference series.
Austin Peay leads the nine-team league, one game ahead of second-place Southeast.
