SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The McDowell Capahas dropped to 20-10 on the season with two one-run losses during Saturday's doubleheader with Springfield.
Springfield won both games with its final at-bats, winning 6-5 in the first game with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the nightcap, Springfield needed extra innings to secure a 10-9 victory in nine innings.
McDowell pitcher Lanson DeBrock got saddled with both losses in relief. DeBrock walked home the winning run in the first game after an error kept the inning alive.
The Capahas were outhit in the first contest 10-4. Jerry Wolsey drove home three runs for the Capahas in the fifth inning with a bases-loaded double. Steve Kress added a solo home run in the sixth and Tom Bolen singled and scored on a groundout in the seventh.
Kevin Vent hurled the first five innings, fanning seven and allowing four runs, of which only two were earned. DeBrock relieved from there and took the loss.
Springfield outhit the Capahas 10-8 in the second game, rallying to tie the score 9-9 in the seventh and then winning with a run in the ninth. Robert Kern led the Capahas with two hits. After taking a 9-7 lead in the fifth inning, McDowell didn't score again.
Goreville, Ill., and Ste. Genevieve come to Capaha Field today for a three-team doubleheader. McDowell plays seven innings with Goreville at 1 p.m. and then Goreville will meet Ste. Genevieve. The Capahas will complete the days action by playing Ste. Genevieve in the final game at approximately 5:30 p.m.
