Broadcaster Pat Summerall attended the first day of the Dallas Cowboys' minicamp Saturday, two months after getting a liver transplant. Summerall said it was his first trip on his own since being cleared to drive. The 73-year-old former NFL kicker, who lives in nearby Southlake, said he feels good but gets tired quickly. Summerall received a new liver April 10.
Golf
Ernie Els came out firing and never let up Saturday until he had a 6-under 66, an immaculate round that gave him a two-shot lead in the Memorial. Els pulled away with back-to-back birdies late in the round at Muirfield Village, getting up-and-down on the par-5 15th and following with a tee shot into 6 feet on the 16th to give himself a small cushion over Fred Couples (68), K.J. Choi (68) and Justin Rose (69). Five players were within three shots of the lead, including three-time Memorial winner Tiger Woods, who got into Sunday contention for the third straight time with a 67 that put him at 9-under 207.
Karrie Webb put herself in position for her first victory of the year, birdieing four of the final five holes for an 8-under 64 and a two-stroke lead in the Kellogg-Keebler Classic. Jill McGill and Seol-An Jeon were tied for second.
Andy Bean shot a 7-under 65 for a share of the second-round lead with Bob Gilder in the Farmers Charity Classic. Bean and Gilder (68) had 10-under 134 totals. First-round leader Sammy Rachels (73), Jim Thorpe (70), Tom Purtzer (69), Stewart Ginn (71) and Vicente Fernandez (71) were tied for third at 7 under.
Gymnastics
Courtney Kupets and Carly Patterson shared the title at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Saturday night, giving the Americans a 1-2 punch that few other countries can match. They finished with 76.45 points, a full point ahead of the rest of the field.
Motorsports
Bobby Hamilton Jr. will have the lead when the rain-delayed NASCAR Busch series race resumes Monday at Dover International Speedway. The MNBA 200 was stopped after 28 of 200 laps Saturday.
