Southeast's Johnson earns medalist at Drury tourney

JACKSON, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri State golfer Bryan Johnson took first place in the Drury Intercollegiate Invitational at Bent Creek Golf Course Tuesday.

He took first place among 80 competitors with a 3-under par 213 in three rounds. He was the only Southeast player to finish in the top 20. Fourteen schools participated.

Indians coach Carroll Williams said most of the golfers were unaware of the nation's terrorist developments during their rounds.

"We didn't know anything about it until mid-morning," Williams said. "It was on TV in the clubhouse, but none of the players or coaches knew about it, unless they found out about it when they made the turn."

Johnson, who was a semifinalist in the Missouri Amateur Tournament over the summer shot rounds of 74, 70 and 69.

The Indians took eighth place with a score of 914. The University of Evansville finished first with 888 points.
