Redhawks men run to third-place finish in OVC

McNab led the Southeast men with a second-place finish, while the women's team placed fifth.

The Southeast Missouri State men's cross country team fell just short of coach Miles Krieger's goal for the Ohio Valley Conference meet.

But the Redhawks still finished third Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn., to narrowly miss out on matching their best OVC finish ever. The 1992 and 1993 Southeast men's squads both placed second, which was Krieger's goal.

As expected, heavy favorite Eastern Kentucky ran away with the title in the meet hosted by Austin Peay.

Eastern Kentucky captured its 15th OVC men's title with 29 points. Morehead State edged out Southeast for the runner-up spot. The Eagles had 72 points to 75 for the Redhawks.

Samford was fourth with 87 points, followed by Eastern Illinois (120), Austin Peay (148), Jacksonville State (148), Tennessee Tech (216), Tennessee-Martin (279) and Tennessee State (289).

Southeast sophomore Kevin McNab earned first-team all-OVC honors by placing second. He covered the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 25 seconds.

Redhawks' sophomore Brandon Karcher also made first-team all-OVC -- the award goes to the top seven finishers -- by placing seventh in 25:44.

Also in the top 30 for the Redhawks were James Lee (18th, 26:41), Chris Herren (22nd, 26:47), Danny Stults (26th, 26:58) and Dustin Davis (30th, 27:19).

Eastern Kentucky's Jacob Korir won his third straight individual crown, in 25:03.

On the women's side, Southeast was fifth with 135 points.

Eastern Kentucky's women won for the 21st time, scoring 35 points. Samford was second with 74 points.

Eastern Illinois was third with 100 points, followed by Morehead State (102), Southeast, Jacksonville State (152), Murray State (152), Tennessee Tech (206), Austin Peay (221), Tennessee-Martin (276) and Tennessee State (305).

Southeast sophomore Juli Koenegstein placed eighth in 19:05 over 5-kilometers. She made second-team all-OVC, which goes to the runners who finish eighth through 14th.

Also in the top 30 for the Redhawks were Brittni Peck (18th, 19:39) and Sarah Verelst (27th, 20:11).

Linnea Woldtvedt, a freshman walk-on from Central High School, placed 49th for the Redhawks in 21:15. She was Southeast's No. 5 finisher.

Samford's Katherine Herring won the race in 18:27.

Volleyball wins at home

The Southeast volleyball team closed out its home schedule Saturday by sweeping Austin Peay.

Southeast won 30-22, 30-26, 30-21, improving to 12-15 overall and 6-6 in OVC play. The Governors are 3-21 and 1-11.

On senior day at Houck Field House, the Redhawks' two seniors help lead the way. Jessica Koeper had 16 kills and 11 digs, while Jamie Baumstark dished out 27 assists.

Brittany Hastings added 10 kills, Molly Davis had 14 digs and Karleigh DeLong contributed 13 digs.
