With the Cape Kohlfeld Capahas semi-pro baseball team needing financial contributions to cover expenses for the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., "The Pinch Hitters" are stepping to the plate to help out the team.
Kelly Keene and Bob Camp, Cape Girardeau entertainers, got together a band called "The Pinch Hitters" and will hold a benefit concert in Capaha Park on Sunday from 5-8 p.m.
All proceeds from the concert will go help pay the Capahas expenses of around $4,000 while they play in Wichita.
"I've been a sports fan all my life and Kelly's probably the No. 1 fan of the Capahas," said Camp. "When I saw in the Southeast Missourian that (the Capahas) needed help, Kelly and I wanted to do something to help the team."
The Southeast Missourian kicked-off the fund-raising by donating $500 to Capahas manager Jess Bolen.
Camp said his band plays all styles of music and several other local musicians will be on hand for the three-hour benefit.
Area residents are encouraged to come out to Capaha Park to show their support for the Capahas. Donations will be solicited during the concert and buckets will also be set up in the park for drive-thru donations.
"People can just drive through the park and donate to the team," said Camp. "The only reason we're doing this is to help the Capahas."
Residents going to the concert are encouraged to brink lawn chairs and their own refreshments.
The Capahas opened play in the NBC World Series late Friday night. Depending on the outcome of that game, they play Sunday at either 10 a.m., or 1 p.m. If they win one of the two games they play this weekend, the Caps will return to Wichita for more games next weekend.
