SIKESTON, Mo. -- Oran High picked up arguably its most impressive baseball win of the year Wednesday, knocking off Class 3A Sikeston 7-2 on the road.
The Bulldogs, state-ranked in Class 3A and the top seed in the upcoming SEMO Conference Tournament, dropped to 11-3 after starting the year 10-0. The 1A Eagles improved to 11-2.
Adam Friga picked up the win by pitching all seven innings. He allowed no earned runs on seven hits, with three strikeouts and no walks.
Chris Cota suffered the loss in relief. He went three innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits, three walks and two hit batters.
Garrett Cook went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted to lead the Eagles' offense.
Advance 4, Bell City 3
ADVANCE, Mo. -- The area's last undefeated baseball team suffered its first loss as Advance knocked off Bell City.
The Cubs, ranked 10th in the latest Class 1A coaches' poll, dropped to 10-1.
Advance (7-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and got the winning run when Adam Rainey, who singled home Jason Bahr earlier, crossed home plate on a passed ball.
Aaron Cantrell got the win in relief. He went two innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out three. Rainey started and went five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks. Rainey fanned eight.
Bahr and Blane Tidwell each went 2-for-3 for Advance. The Hornets outhit Bell City 8-5.
Gabe Scherer suffered the loss in relief.
St. Vincent 9, Hillsboro 3
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Tyler Wengert pitched seven strong innings as St. Vincent improved to 5-8.
Wengert allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits and no walks. He fanned four.
Derek Kutz and Brandon Carroll both went 3-for-4 for St. Vincent, while Josh Triller went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Cape Central 12, Dexter 6
DEXTER, Mo. -- In a game from Tuesday, Central banged out 17 hits and Jason Chavez pitched four strong innings.
The Tigers (10-8, 4-2 SEMO Conference) led 12-1 before the Bearcats made the final score a bit more respectable with a five-run seventh.
Jason Chavez allowed four hits and one run, with eight strikeouts and no walks, to earn the victory. Rob Carr hurled the final three frames, allowing eight hits and five runs.
Zac Fidler and Dusty Barrows each went 3-for-4 to pace the Tigers offensively. Justin Welker had two hits, including his third home run of the season. Seth Hudson and Mitch Craft also added two hits each while Barrows and Hudson both delivered two RBIs.
Central's JV (8-3, 6-0 SEMO Conference) prevailed 8-3 behind the pitching of Travis Johnson. Patrick Slattery had two hits.
SOFTBALL
Chaffee 10, Scott City 9
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee used an amazing comeback to slip past rival Scott City.
The Lady Red Devils (9-1) trailed 7-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, when they exploded for all 10 of their runs and seven of their nine hits. The Lady Rams countered with two in the seventh but fell short.
"Scott City was kind of cruising along and had the game completely under control, then we just out of nowhere erupted," said Chaffee coach Mark Davenport.
Kate Pfefferkorn had three of Chaffee's nine hits, two coming in the sixth. Ashley Pepple added two hits.
Pepple pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing 10 hits and just three earned runs, thanks to a whopping eight Chaffee errors.
Shana Wadlington, who had been impressive through five innings, took the loss. She also had two hits, as did A. Heisserer, A. Lynn and K. Smith.
Kelly 8, Twin Rivers 2
BENTON -- Natalie Lewer hurled a four-hitter, with nine strikeouts, as Kelly rolled.
The Lady Hawks (9-1) had nine hits, led by Lewer with three. Monica Senciboy added two.
Leopold 7, Meadow Heights 4
PATTON, Mo. -- Leopold got a seven-hit pitching performance from Jodi VanGennip.
The Lady Wildcats (7-3) had 11 hits, led by Holly Jansen with three, including a triple and double. Melissa Thele and Amanda Trankle both added two hits.
GOLF
St. Vincent 142, Hillsboro 167
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent broke its own school record which it set last week at the Perryville Country Club as it had five golfers score a 37 or better.
Craig Schumer carded a career-best, one-under par 34, becoming the third golfer at St. Vincent to score a 34 this year.
Adam Prost posted a 35, followed by Jon Paulus (36), Wes Richardet (37) and Mark Gotto 37.
"We played the ball down," St. Vincent coach Tom Prost said. "And they were all putting real good. None of them three-putted today."
Jesse Helms led Hillsboro with a 40.
Jackson 152, Poplar Bluff 156
JACKSON, Mo. -- Jackson tied its best score of the season against Poplar Bluff, one of the best teams in Southeast Missouri.
Peyton Sims and Kyle Perry both shot 37s to lead Jackson at the par-35 Kimbeland Country Club. Matt Litzelfelner followed with a 38 and Brett McDowell posted a 40.
Jackson's JV, led by Matt Bowman's 39, beat Poplar Bluff 165-166.
ND takes second in quad
JACKSON, Mo. -- Dexter, with a score of 157, took first place among four teams at a quad meet held by Notre Dame at the par-36 Bent Creek Golf Course Wednesday.
Notre Dame took second with a 163, followed by Kennett at 178 and Clearwater at 187.
Dexter's Kyle Christian was medalist with a 36.
For Notre Dame, Tim Buerck posted a 38, followed by Elliot Maschmann (41) and Nick Martin and Adam Fenwick (42 each).
Clearwater's Drew Horne and Kennett's Brian Shumate both scored 38.
GIRLS SOCCER
Jackson 7, St. Vincent 1
JACKSON, Mo. -- Jackson used a big offensive surge to roll past St. Vincent.
The Lady Indians (10-5) got two goals from Courtney Urhahn and one each from Lacie Hodo, Dana Wright, Erin Hartman, KT Biri and Trina Lang.
Wright and Wendy Blankenship both had two assists, with Urhahn, Biri and Kenzie Turley all recording one.
St. Vincent (11-6-1) got its only goal from Caitlin Hoeh, with an assist by Beth Hennemann.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Ft. Zumwalt West 108, Notre Dame 77
ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Notre Dame came up short in a dual meet at Ft. Zumwalt South.
The Lady Bulldogs had three first-place finishers: Stefanie Campos in the 200 freestyle, Lindsay Kuper in the 200 IM and Iris Elfrink in diving.
