CHAFFEE -- Notre Dame scored three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Chaffee 5-3 Wednesday in high school baseball action and remain unbeaten on the season.

Notre Dame (4-0) broke a 2-2 deadlock when Ben Gosche drew a base-loaded walk off Josh Hanlon to score Danny Wittenborn. Dirk Dirnberger followed with a hard smash off the first baseman's glove to score two insurance runs.

"It was good to see Dirk put the ball in play when we had men on base and needed a couple of runs," said Notre Dame coach Gregg Muench.

With one out, Wittenborn and Nathan McGuire both singled and Josh Eftink walked to load the bases. Gosche then walked to break the tie.

Chris Canfield (2-0) went the distance for Notre Dame, allowing five hits, striking out five and walking three.

Hanlon also pitched the entire game, giving up six hits and walking seven. He also struck out seven Bulldogs.

Notre Dame returns to action Tuesday when Cape Central visits for a SEMO Conference game.

Scott City 15, Oak Ridge 0

OAK RIDGE -- Scott City improved to 2-0 by dominating Oak Ridge on the road Wednesday.

The Rams pounded 19 hits in the four-and-a-half inning game. Joey Jacobs went 4-for-4, Lance Amick went 3-for-4 and Tim Lowery, Kirt Burger and John Wipfler each had two hits. Wipfler had two home runs and Burger added another.

Jason Landis pitched all five frames and earned the win. He allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked two.

For Oak Ridge (1-1), Mike McCall suffered the loss. Brian Glueck went 2-for-3 offensively.

Scott City will travel to Egyptian (Ill.) Friday. Oak Ridge will host Leopold on Tuesday.

Softball

Chaffee 2, Notre Dame 0

CHAFFEE -- The Lady Red Devils posted their third shutout of the week as they blanked Notre Dame on Wednesday.

Jamie Duncan allowed two of Notre Dame's three hits in the first inning, but a double play bailed her out of trouble. Duncan struck out three and walked two.

In the bottom of the first, Duncan helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single to score Brandi Foulk. Chaffee added an insurance run in the sixth.

Notre Dame's Randi Senciboy allowed just four hits but suffered the loss. She struck out four and walked two.

"Our defense, pitching and everything is looking real solid right now," said Chaffee coach Mark Devenport.

St. Vincent will visit Chaffee on Monday.

Scott City 10, Oak Ridge 5

OAK RIDGE -- Scott City moved to 3-0 with a win on the road against Oak Ridge Wednesday.

Amy O'Brien earned the win. She pitched four innings, allowing four hits while striking out five and walking one.

The Lady Rams totaled 16 hits. Dana Pettit had three hits and Tara Sanford, Jenny Miller, Tonya Mathews and Becka Edmondson each had two.

Scott City will travel to Egyptian (Ill.) Friday.

Golf

Cape Central 157, Farmington 159

Cape Central nipped Farmington in a meet Wednesday at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Central's Bryan Welker and Dane McLaird shared medalist honors; both shot 37.

Also for the Tigers, Mike Oslund shot 41 and Karin Askelof shot 42.

For Farmington, Greg Lapp shot 39, Tom Conklin 39, Steve Basler 40 and John Clinkhardt 41.

Perryville 2nd in triangular

ARCADIA VALLEY -- Perryville's 182 placed it between Arcadia Valley (154) and Clearwater (195) Wednesday at Arcadia Valley Country Club.

For Perryville, Ryan Besand shot 42, John Miederhoff 45, Nathan Rellergert 46 and Phil Wilson 49.

Girls soccer

Notre Dame saw its record drop to 2-2-1 with a 5-0 loss to Usaline Academy Wednesday.

Ursaline led 2-0 at halftime and added three second-half goals.

Notre Dame lost to Ursaline 7-1 last year.

"We gave them a much better game this year," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley. "We felt good about the way we played at the end of the first half."

Notre Dame visits Poplar Bluff today.
