FARMINGTON -- Notre Dame qualified for the Class 2A state golf meet for a second consecutive year Monday, edging out St. Pius of Festus by two strokes.
Arcadia Valley won the nine-team district meet at Eagle Lake by a comfortable 15-shot margin, shooting a 320 total. Notre Dame finished at 335 as St. Pius carded a 337. Rounding out the remainder of the field: Portageville (342), Herculaneum (358), Kennett (363), Malden (365), Clearwater (368) and Caruthersville (369).
Arcadia Valley's Janszen Ringo was medalist with an even-par 72.
Dan Buerck paced Notre Dame with an 80 while Jonathan LeGrand and Chris Koepper each shot 82s. Matt Howard and Chris Seratti tied for the team's fourth score at 91.
"Arcadia Valley will be one of the favorites to win the state championship," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "They're really strong. Actually, 320 is not one of their better scores.
"We knew St. Pius would be our competition for the second spot. I knew our kids really wanted it. Four of our five kids played at state last year."
The state meet will be held next Monday and Tuesday at Lake of the Woods in Columbia.
BASEBALL
Kelly 10, Perryville 6
BENTON -- The Hawks avenged a 12-10 loss to the Pirates suffered this past weekend in the Cape Central Big 8 Tournament.
Denver Stuckey allowed five hits in five innings to record the win. He walked two and struck out three. Stuckey also had two of Kelly's 11 hits, including a double.
Ben Klipfel led the way with three hits and two RBIs, while Jon Livingston and Justin Vetter each had a double among their two hits. Vetter finished with two RBIs.
Perryville (11-10) took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the second, but Kelly (10-8) pushed across six runs. The Hawks scored two more in the third for a 10-3 advantage.
Kelly returns to action Thursday when Kennett visits.
SOFTBALL
Notre Dame 8, Scott City 4
Notre Dame backed up the three-hit pitching of Jill Huber with error-free defense and defeated Scott City Monday.
The Lady Bulldogs also used a two-run triple by Rachael Schlosser in a five-run first and built a 6-0 lead by the second inning. Scott City scored four times in the fourth, but Notre Dame (8-4) countered with the game's final two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Sarah Morrow and Suzanne Schwartz each wrapped out two of Notre Dame's seven hits. Morrow finished with two RBIs.
Huber struck out seven and walked three.
Notre Dame will visit Charleston on Thursday.
Chaffee 9, Sikeston 2
CHAFFEE -- Chaffee used a balanced offensive attack Monday in improving its season record to 12-1.
Nine different players helped account for Chaffee's 10 hits on the day. Jamie Duncan led the way with two hits.
Chaffee never trailed in the game as Brandi Foulk staked the Lady Red Devils to a 1-0 lead in the first with a home run. Chaffee added two more runs in the fourth. The Lady Red Devils led just 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, but broke loose for five runs.
Kelly Glueck (5-0) held Sikeston to three hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Chaffee returns to action today when East Prairie visits.
SOCCER
Notre Dame 3, West Plains 2, OT
Notre Dame survived a second half rally by West Plans Monday to win on a sudden death goal by Jennifer Glueck -- her second of the game -- in the 13th minute of overtime.
Beth Essner assisted on the game-winning goal to improve the Lady Bulldogs record to 9-8-1.
Notre Dame led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Christine Kimball and Glueck. Kimball scored off a free kick and assisted on Glueck's first goal to put the Lady Bulldogs up 2-0.
Notre Dame's junior varsity also won 3-0 improving their record to 2-1-3. Stephanie Miller, Jill Edwards and Beth Essner scored.
Cape Central JV 3, Carbondale (Ill.) JV 0
Cape Central's junior varsity shutout Carbondale with a convincing win at Shawnee Park.
Annie Christian and Kim Aslinger scored first half goals for Central. Rachel Hessenkemper assisted on Christian's goal. In the second half, Katie Cozby scored on a pass from Mindy Hoffman to seal the win.
